'Knowles who originated tile uliia , and tne general scheme of."The Koacl Everiastlug," a road which will perpetuate lor all time the events which-nave happened 'during the present war. it will be a great highway from Liege to Zeebrugge, Ustend; -llpres, Lille, Lens, Douai, Cajnbrai, and St. Quentin, all along what is now the Weetwji front. ■'■ All the nations who liave-fought in the cause of civilisation will- be 'represented' by their national trees, lining tnis great roiul. Where the Belgians lougnt, poplars will be growing. Great Britain will be represented by' tne oak, France by the chestnut, America by the red wood of California,' Australia by tile eucalyptus, and Canada by the maple. All along the road will be monuments commemmorating the great 'deeds of the war., Famous ' battles will be perpetuated in stone and iron; our wonderful v Air Service will be depicted in every - possible'phnse of its activity; the different Army services will be represented; while certain famous relics, such as' the Cloth-Hall of Ypres and villages historic ae the ■ scene •of great battles* will' be retained in-the,state they were left by the.Germans as a warning to civilisation of the effects of war. ■ There are already some thousands of members—a society known as the "La Societe du Service Universelle"—pledged to support "The Road Everlasting." A minimum of 2,000,000 members from Ctreat Britain, VFraneo, Italy, and America will bo required to make the initial project successful. The idea is that everyone who. has lost a relative through the war should come together in a cominon bond of sympathy and assist to establish for -mankind a road which might in truth bo a rood of poace.
