MANAWATU MEETING
CUP WON BY NOBLEMAN.
By Telegraph—Special Correspondent. Palmerston North, December 2G. The first day of the Manawatu Summer meeting was held to-day in showery weather. Tho attendance was not quite up to last year's. The racing was excellent. The totalisator put through JMO,2<tO, as against £15,401 on the corresponding day last year. . l Owing to the mail train being somo forty minutes .late, hundreds of passengers from Wellington missed the first twe races. A light shower fell after the Juvenile Handicap, but it did not affect tho going. ' Moutoa, Ivanovo, Utuwai, and Sacramento wero the public fancies for the Trial Plate. Papanui, Yankee Jack, and Hurry Up wero the first to show out. With a furlong gone the positions were unchanged, but at tlio home turn Hurry Up took charge and wori fairly easily from Yankee Jack. Papanui was half a length away, and Utuwai finished fourth. Zola had most friends in the Hurdles, with Ivurapai second choice. Ore Ore led Arlington and Zola for the first six furlongs, when Zola went to the iront. He held his own to the last fence, where Waipnnoa took charge and won easily. Kurapai was close up, third, and tlicn ■ came First Line. Too much use was mado of the favourite, otherwise he must havo'done a lot botter. . . Kipling had most friends in the Gillies Hack Handicap and he ran a good race, but the weight beat him at the finish. At tho start the favourite. Mill Queen, King's Armour, and Cotillion were prominent. King's Armour led Kipling into the straight, where Cotillion challenged, and after she had been shaken off Ahika came fast on the outside and beat King s Armour by a neck. Cotillion was a fair third and Penury Rose next. All tho acceptors went to the post for the Cup. Client , was a better favourite than Noblemen, with Battle Song third choice. All the remainder were evenly backed. In the birdcage Client stripped well, but Nobleman's condition was splendid, as was that of Dusky Eve and Classification. At the 1 start Ladogeur and Classification were slow to move, and Master Moutoa ltd Nobleman, witn the others bunched. Entering the straight Ladogeur rushed to the front, and going past the stand he was clear of Master Moutoa and Nobleman. At the halfmile Nobleman pulled to the front and lie led into the straight from Master Moutoa. At the distance Dusky Eve challenged, but last year's winner easily disposed of him and won by a clear length. Rowi Ppto was two lengths off, third. The top' weight, who had been in the rear throughout, finished fourth. Affectation was a few pounds botter favourite than Oratress in the Juvenile Handicap, but while the first-named won nicely, Oratress was never prominent. At the start the favourite and Asterina were prominent and they led into the straight from Boiiny Briar. At the distance Asterina was in trouble and Bonny Briar threw out a duU*luincd cii'allejige to the favourite, but (he latter responded and won by a couple of lengths. The Fordnll . representative Moutoa Camp was o good fnvDifrito in the Hack Welter Handicap, with Signorella, Army Service, and First Salute evenly backed. None of the well-backed division filled a place. At tho slart War Scot led, but down tho back Idle Talk supplanted him and led into the straight from Army Service, who made up his ground very fast. In the run home tho last-named failed and Rienzi challenged the leader, and Mann also joined in. A punishing finish saw Rienzi prevail by a narrowmargin, ivith Mann right up. Army Servico was fourth. Quinn's Post was prominent to tho home turn, but First Salute nnd Moutoa Camp were in the , ruck throughout.
Croesus was the actual favourite ill the Fitzherberl. Handicap, but. several of the others were heavily backed. After a long delay at the barrier a fwd start was effected. Croesus and luali soon showed out, and down the back they led Chimera, Pennon, forfredi, and Nystad. Rounding Iho bend Croesus forged ahead and he shook off Inali beforo the straight was entered. At the members' stand Fonnon joined Croesus and the topweight gave way, bui, over tho final hunurofl yards Nystad finished very fast and got nj> on the po.st. ("roesus was two longths off, and 80-Pee;i finished fourth. The concluding event went to llydrus after a good race, with Hyginas second and Multaine third.
