WELLINGTON SOUTH ELECTION
:■:■ -_— *—± •■ LABOUR MEETING. ' i., A meeting in support of the candidature of the; Labour candidate for Wellington South' (Mr. R. Seniple) was held :in the Star Theatre last night.. Mr.#A. ; Parlane was in the chair. Several speakers addressed the meeting. ; The Hon. T. J. Paul, M.L.C., spoke ' about the faults of the National Government, and urged that wrongs could best -be righted by electing the Labour Party's , i nominees to the House. ; ■ Mr. H. E. Holland, M.P., declared thai 'he wus prepared personally, to accept : the name -Bolshevik. (Applause.) "The ; Bolshevik," he said, "were the Socialist 1 Party ,that oyer and above all Socialist •parties in the world stood true to work- ; ing class principles." (Applause.) They ' hod,-he continued, created the keenest ■ domocracy'ihat had ever been established in the world. He found much fault with the National Government for hav--1 ing denied the people the right to vote , by'prolonging the life of Parliament. He ! criticised adversely the proposal to take ! heavy indemnities from Germany. These ' indemnities, he said, could be paid only i in goods, wimt W onld be the economic effect of this, having regard to the de- : iriands of some people who declared that there should be no trading with Ger- . many after the wot? A voice: We would have to go to Ger--1 many to get a job. Mr. Holland said that the effect would be that the German workmen would be employed at higli wages to produce the : indemnity, while the British workers would be idle. ' L Mr. W. Parry spoks in justification of 1 the alliance of the Labour Party with ; the trades unions who„occasionally went ; on strike. - ~',.,, Mr. Jl. J. Reardon, president of the Trades and Labour Council, spoke on tho '.Labour platform and emphasised the fact i that every nominee of the party would "be pledged to use his best endeavour to : give legislative effect to the Labour plat- ' form. , ~ .. ' Mr. R. Semple addressed the meeting last of all, and followed, for the most i part, the lines of previous speeches. < \ meeting ,of ladies was held in the Methodist Church, Brooklyn, on Satur- . dav night to decide upon means of sup; : porting the ■ candidature of Mr. George '■ Frost for the Wellington South seat. Miss : Crabtree presided. Definite- proposals were placed before the meeting, and it 1 was resolved to work the district energetically with a view to furthering Mr. : Jrost's interests. '. Mr. John Castle will address tho eleci tors at the Newtown Library Hall to- ' night, at the Brooklyn, Baptist Schooli room to-morrow • evening,... and at the ' Masonic Hall; Berliampore, on Wednes- : day night..
