m. MATHEW HOLMES
AU Wellington will he grieved to learn ol' the death of Dr. Mutnow Holmes, of Upper Willis Street, which occurred yesterday ailernoon, the cause being a .severe attack ol pneumonic influenza. Dr. Holmes,was the sou ql' Mr, Ja.iiies.Holines, ol the Awniiiba SI ml farm al; Oaniaru, 11 ml a nephew of .Miss llolims, ol Hinvkesloni' Street. Me was, educated in Oamaru, attended .(ho ~High School at Dunei.lin, and, tonkin course at the .(Hugo Universily, aller which he went, lluino and studied"'medicine at the Edinburgh University, where he .had a brilliant career. lie was afterwards .appointed resident -surgeon at (he Chalmers: Hospital for Children in 'Kdinburgh, anil gained much ,experience .inrxhlldrelVH complninls, for which die -has been noted locally. Some nine or lon, .years ago he. returned to Wellington,.and 'set.., up iik-practicc here, marrying' Miss Elsie Huwsoii, daughter of Mr. Herbert J', .ifivivson; oij Sealoun. When war broke i.H'i Dr.. Holmes offered his services. : .to Hie Govern incut, and was dispatched, with our nr.il Expeditionary. Force to Samoa, (.)i! iiis return he went forward will) our forces to Sinai. Egypt,'and Gallipuli, and saw a. great tail of the'worst of that ugly campaign.
Subsequently ins was invalided back to Now Zealand,-iiml resumed practice here. Dr. Holmes contracted influenza, a week ago, and .succumbed to tlie disease in, its deadliest form. Ho leaves ;i. widow and two children, with, whom imicli sympathy will bo expressed.
DR. E. A". W. HENLEY". The death is announced of Dr. E..A. W.. Henley, of Napier. '-Tlie deceased v was born in Dublin, in. 1875, and had j) brilliant career at Trinity College,' Dublin.' After taking the.degree of M.8., B.G'h., 8.A.0.; he was for a short time in practice in Belfast, going .to. Napier- in li'fll, where lie ;oon came to'lioid a high pusilion in his profession. "He was.a iniii'i who did not spare himself. He joined the N.Z. Medical Corps' at the beginning of the war. and was captain-surgeon in Hie 9th East Coast Regiment, and P.M.O. in Group.". He had .acted-as.secretary for .this British Medical Association; lliiwke's Bay Division, for the last fifteen years, and was delegate of the division to the executive of the association. He had also, been acting port- medical ofljeer for some years. He was Jceeuly interested in church affairs, and was vicar's churchwarden of-St. John's,-a lay canon of tho Cathedral, .and, a .member, of Hie' standing committee, of (ho- dioqese. He \va's also a trustee of ,the Plunket Society and St., Mary's Home. ,He was a man whose genial" nature 'and sterling qualities endeared him to a large circle of friends. Dr. Henley had been ailing lor some time, and recently visited Sydney (o secure special •'treatment (or diabetes. The pressure of the influenza epidemic was felt as a great straiii. .'.lie was unable to transact business, on Tuesday.'' The. following 'ilny he became mueli worse, and' passed away shortly after, noon on Thursday. DR. WILLIAM BEYv ■ Dr. "William Bey died on Thursday morning of the prevailing epidemic, say? Our Greytown correspondent. ...-.' He had only,been ill a few days. The late Dr. Bey was senior colonel as -a, medical: officer. He has resided in Greytown' for over thirty years, and was well known and respected from one end of, the Val-ley-to the other. His only son was recently killod. in action, and he leaves a wife and daughter (Mrs';' F/. Bunny) to mourn their loss. Dr. Bey was (17 years of age at the time of his death/
