MELBOURNE CUP

COMMENTS ON THE EAOE. - By Teleemph-.Press Assdcia_tion--CopyriEht

* Sydney, November 6. The "Herald" considers that Nijjhtwatch was lucky to win and Kennaqiihair unlucky to lose the Oup. Going out of the straight the first time there were two horses behind Kennaquhair, who eot.on tho heels of Desert Gold and nearly, camo down. Later a beaten horse interfered with him, but he rapidly made up ground and followed Kishtwatch into the straijht. but* was unable to catch the winnsr, though tho honours of the race rested with him. The winner finished camely under tho whio. Desert Gold, with whom a, waiting race was attempted, quite failed to materialise. Finmark might have done better but for running out at the turn, thereby losing Beycral lengths. The race was run at a solid pace from end to end. the first half-mile in, 503 sec, the second in KJsec. the "third in 52eec, and the last in 49isec. . • ■■',„■ i The "Telegraph" says that the Cup went to the horse who, when tho weights wero issued, was generally regarded as being uuitc unworthy of consideration m winning connection, but Nichtwatch had two things in his favour. He had done very little racing, and was a, son of Wakeful, one of the best performers that ever trod the turf. Then he was well ridden. M such mistake was made as regards pace as caused the Derby to be spoiled, and, though Nightwatch did/ not make .a new record for two mileß. he succeeded in dipping a quarter-second-off the previous best Melbourne Cup time.
