OUR LATEST V.C.
SERGEANT JUDSON'S CAREER. (Special Dispatch from the New Zealand Official War Correspondent, Captain i Malcolm Boss.) J October 20. 1 The military career of Sergeant Judson, t our latest V.C, is truly remarkable, lib C having almost within one month, gained e the D.C.M., the Military Medal and the o Victoria Cross. He got his D.C.JI. lor ] heroic action on the front line between < Gonimecoiirt and Hebiitorne. On July 24 ho led a patrol by daylight along a i fiiip leading to the enemy's position. By j bombing he forced tho enemy to re- , treat six hundred yards, and so enabled , thn following-up troops to garrison and hold the captured trench. .For twentyfour hours he was untiring in his eltorts to organise and .hold the trench. Next morning, almost at tho time Ins unit was to bo relieved, tho enemy pierced the line, to tho left, and ho went alone to see what was talcing place. He found six survivors of the garrison, whom ho organised and posted, by fighting his way forward into the old position, 1 Hiding the officet dead at his post, he remained with these nion until visited by their officer, who asked him to stay until the situation had been readjusted, lhis he did under very heavy bombing, and ma-chine-gun fire. The enemy again collected for an assault, so he crept torn aid alone and threw six bombs amongst them, thus drawing their bombing in hie W.n direction and so saving his men. buDneriiiently, on tho same night, the enemy continued putting up flares from a position sixty yards in front of the post, so ho again crept forward and threw bombs. For forty-eight hours his action and initiative in attack resulted disastrously ior 1 On Cn tlie 3 16 th of the following month, near Puisieux, ho exhibited courage ol tho highest order. In order that the troops on our left might advance it was necessary that the enemy's machine-guns should be promptly silenced. Any attempts to outflank the guns would result in severe casualties, to the troops on our left Judson, with his section following, rushed straight at tho gun positions, disconcerting the enemy and capturing three machine-guns and seventeen prisoners, without loss to our side.
