PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS

WELLINGTON SOCIETY'S ANNUAL ~'; KBfOET. . . The committee'of the . Wellington Society for; the' Prevention'of Cruelty to Animals, in its annual report, states 'that ■ the cases dealt with- by the- ..inspector numbered 261, which total does not include "a mnaber 'of • minor cases dealt with by wakings and advice- to the parties implicated. Fourteen oases necessitated tho offenders being prosecuted— thirteen carrying Convictions, with fines imposed ranging from £1 7s. to ,£9 4s. One- case proved unsuccessful on account of inability to prove to the Satisfaction of ;tho Jfagifltrate guilty, knowledge. on the part of the 'defendant : The public interest in the society's work was well maintained during the year, valuable help having l>een rendered by members and others reporting to the inspector cases of cruelty, all of which were investigated. ■Two water troughs arranged .to le erected by'tho City Council have not yet been completed owing :tb the scarcity of labour and materials. Where it' has been found convenient the' committee' have had boards ' erected over water troughs,with a short, sentence painted on as follows: "S.P.C.A. Please give your' horse a drink. Wo speak for those who cannot speak for .themselves." The coiilmittee regrets that it finds itself faced with a falling revenue, the total subscriptions and donations being this year' nearly ..£l4. less than last. A' special-donation-from Mrs. II; A. William's of .£SO, of; which tho committee wnre asked to use only the interest, is acknowledged with gratitude. The-com-mittee desires, to place on record its appreciation of the-.valuable services rendered to the society and its officials in various ways by" the Commissioner of 1 Olios .and the force under his command, : also to,the various 'members of the. general public who have brought coses'of ill-treatment'of'animals under tue notice of its inspector.
