"NELSON'S DAY"
NAVY. LEAGUE CELEBRATIONS
SPEECH BY SIR JOSEPH WARD
Yesterday was Nelson's Day. The bright streamers of bunting and fluttering scraps of colour high over the -buildings spoiie of the event in no uncertain manner. Unfortunately it was ono of those dull, dusty, windy days which encourage headaches and ill temper, but the Navy Leaguers did not mind it a bit. With the cheerful spirit of Mark Tapley they, at a late hour, set out to mark the anniversary of Nelson's death in some befitting way, and seeing how small a margin of time they left themselves it was very well done. At noon the Trentham Band enmo to town, and after lunsh it paraded in full strength, through the city, preceded by some Amokura ooys bearing aloft the Union Jack and New Zealand ensign, on poles oi\ which were suspended laurel wreaths by way of tribute to the hero of Trafalgar and the Nile. During the afternoon, after school hours, the doors of the Empress, King's, and Our Theatres were thrown open to the children of the State schools, who were addressed by leading citizens and Leaguers, and subsequently witnessed the screening of suitable programmes of pictures, whic'.t were very much appreciated by the youngsters. Mr. Bakewell, Chief Inspector of Schools, addressed the children at the lung's Theatre, Jlr. B. Keesing and Lieut.-Col (Dr.) W. K. Fvffe were the speakers at the Empress Theatre, and Can't. T. Chudley, E.N.R., addressed the Island Bay children. Pressure on space prevents publication of the addresses to-day.
