SPANISH INFLUENZA

MAYOR ON THE ALERT. The facr~that coses of Spanish influenza have been reported on vessels arriving in New Zealand and Australia has caused the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) to toko measures to put the city, in'the best possible order to resist an attack by this subtle and insidious enemy. Yesterday afternoon His Worship issued instructions to all the officers concerned that thev • must take steps at once to cleanse the city as vigorously and thoroughly as possible,' and so remove all possible beds 'of contagion. or lurking spots for the disease which has been so destructive to life in other parts of the world. Tho council's inspectors havo been asked to make their of city and residential premises, factories, eating-houses, backyards, and stables in a drastio spirit, and in issuing the instruction, the Mayor calls for the hearty co-operation of all. citizens. Mr. Luke recognises that prevention is better than cure, and it is not his intention to wait until the epidemic is hsre before taking measures to check its ravages. He asks citizens not to be Bparing m the. use ot disinfectants, and in tho case of people in needy circumstances supplies of an effective'disinfectant will be available at a nominal price at the Town Hall. By working on those lines, Mr. Luke hopes to bring about a state of hygiene which will be highly discouraging to the disease, and which may even prevent its gaining a grip in- this city.
