Referring •yesterday,to.the coming amalgamation of Onslow borough with 'Wellington, tho Mayor (Mr. J. r. ]juke)-said-tliat- as- far as he .was personally concerned, he was pleased to know that the boundaries ot tho city, were to be extended,-and he was sure •the step, contemplated, would be lor the mutual benefit of Wellington and. Onslow. He'heartily congratulated the Onslow people, wlio had worked so enthusiastically. ■for...amalg:iniation, particularly Mr. J.:M. Dale, the Mayor, whoso guiding hand hiicl , been of greao assistance to the-borough. /] hose'gentlemen could be. assured that improvements needed would bo carried out to ' the : extent of the'towiciPs-capacity, as soon as-possible. , How. soon that would be he could not say. .War conditions 'had made it extremely difficult) to-secure material of any-.kind almost, and. the staff of the City. Engineer had been fine tooth-combed by the military authorities.. This -might delay, certain- contemplated- works longer, than would be tho ease were the con« ditions , .normal. The first matter to bq giveii consideration-after the amalgamator should; he "thought, be to plan a works policy, and give effect to it aa finance and relative "urgency dictated. It might he mentioned as interesting that probably one of the first big works that will reflect on the Onslow. district will be the big reclamation works at Thorndon, proposed by I the ■Railway Department, and now approy- ' ed by the• City ■Council.'- works-.which, when completed, will carry the berthing accommodation of the port to a i..pQUit...ppposit.e land at present menuf ed "in Onslow borough.
