In dealing with the banking returns yesterday the aggregate of the coin and bullion was stated to amount to £8,146,798, which was strictly correct, but in comparing the figures with .those for the previous year a , niistako was made in that In the figures for last year the amount of "legal tender notes" was included jnd omitted from this year's figures. To etate the matter correctly the coin and bullion and legal tender notes for tho September quarter of this year totalled £9,3 M,648, as compared with £9.847.060 for the corresponding period of 1917, tho shrinkage being £540.412, ond not £1,700,602 as previously stated. Even with this modification the financial poeition is not unsatisfactory. Tho net increase in the denoeits amounted to £1,649,412, and the volume of bullion apparently exported was £540,412. bo that this, added to the deposits, gives £2.189,824. which accounts for tho greater part of. the increase of £3.231,181 shown in the advances and discounts.
