SOLDIERS BOXING
CONTESTS AT TRENTHAM. With the permission of tho Camp Commandant, Oolonol H. 11. Potter, C.M.G., an open boxing tournament for amateurs was held in Trentham Camp-on Thursday eveniug in the 'I.M.C.A. Major D. W. Talbot, investigation officer, presided. Captain A. W. .frocks, M.C.; chief instructor physical and bayonet training, refereed the' bouts. : Captain A. H. Burn, KZ.S.C, infantry instructor, wid Lieutenant A. Tyndall, works officer, were judges, and Lieutenant G. B. Stevenson, musketry staff, kept- time. The tournament\was organised end run by Lieutenant V. Stocker, M.C., aesistant instructor physical and bayonet training, with members of the physical training staff. The prizos, a gold modal for winners of «-eh weight were given—one oach by the Church of England, Y.M.0.A., Presbyterian, and Methodist Institutes. Some exceedingly good bmits eventuated, and •a large and interested audience enjoyed a display of good, clean boxing. The reexilts were as follow: — Light-weight—Semi-final: First bout, Pie. B. J. Jones, 8.45, boat Pte. R. bcott, E. 45; second bout. Pte. M'Cauley, A.45, beat Pte. 'O'Sullivan, N.Z.M.C. Final: Pte. Jones unable to finish?• Pte. M'Cauley,. A.45 winner. ■ Welter-weight—Semi-final: First bout, Cpl. Thomas, Physical Training Staff, beat Pte. Brougham, Aao; seoond bout, Pte. R. Jeffares, 0.44, drew a bye, sparred rounds with Cpl. Ball, Final: Cpl. Thomas, Physical, Training Staff, boat Pte. Jeffares, C.44, Middle-weight — Semi-final: First bout, Pte. W. Preston, A.44, beat L.-Opl. Hawkes, 8.46; second bout, Cpl. Jams, Physical Training Staff, beat L.-Cpl. Fawcett, A.45. Final: Pte. W. Preston, A.44, beat Opl. Jarvis, Physical Training !• Heavy-weight—Final:'Cpl. Brendel, Physical Training Staff, beat Pte. Bennett, C.44.
