The engagement is announced of Lieutenant Hector Bruce Mackenzie, N.K.M.C., son of Sir Thomas and Lady Mackenzie, and Elyn, .only (laughter of George Jasper NieholU, LL.B., late Judge of the Indian Civil Service, and Mrs. Nicholls, of Longfield, Bideford. The marriage was to take place in Scp- / tember.

The death occurred List evening at VogeltoH-n of Mrs. Susannah Jones, at the ago of seventy-four years. The late Mrs. Jones arrived in New Zealand in'the early 'seventies by the ship Buckinghamshire, which called first at Dunedin. About two weeks after arrival Mrs. -Jones proceeded to where she has resided ever since. The deceased lady had been ailing about two weeks before she died. She leaves a family of nine, one son being at the front, leaving with the Thirty-sixth Reinforcements.

Dr. and Mrs. C Raymond and family, of Waipawa, also Minj M'Farlane, who lio.ro-been spending a holiday in Napier, have'left for Sunnier, Cbristehurch, where Mrs. Raymond will reside during her husband's absence at tho front, whither ho goes shortly.

Dr. Mary Jiarkas (Timaru)' is now house physician at tho Bethlehem Royal Hospital. in' Botith-eiist London; Dr. Barkas recently qualified at tho Royal Free. Hospital School of Medicine for Women.

Private advice has been recently received that Mrs. T. G.' Russell, who was a victim to the .influenza epidemic, and is in hospital in New York, is very Beriously/ ill.

Mr. and Mrs. R. Maddren, of Winchestor, are visiting Wellington to seo their son, Trooper A. H. Maddren, who in leaving for the front. Mr. and Mrs. Maddren expect to be in the North Island for a fortnight.

Mrs. E. M. Gregorie (Pahiatua) is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dinwiddie.

Mrs. Gray Glen (Auckland) is staying with Mrs. L. Miles (Timaru).

Miss York and Mrs. Broad, of Waipukurau, are , visiting . Auckland and Itotoruo. Mrs. York and Miss Peckham are leaving Auckland by the Niagara for Sydney.

Miss Florence Allen h at present spending a holiday in Timaru. ■
