CHESS
THE WELLINGTON CLTJB. Last week's play in the championship tourney of tho Wellington Chess Club resulted as follows :-Davies (1) y. Fouhy (0); l'urchas .U' v -.^'' d <i>s and W. Maokay (1) v. Clark (0). The game—Still v. James—was adjourned in an even state, and so was the fixture Davies v. Kelling, in which each player is left with only a king and six pawns. G. A. Tver's remaining games will unfortunately havo to ba scored to his opponent by dofault, as ho has left Wellington and settled in Foxton. Two fixtures require a third sitting, viz., James v. Mnekay (in which tho latter is making a good recovery from a bad start), and Kelling v. Godtschalk (in which the latter lias a decided advantage, 'iieing three pawns to tho good). The fact that no less than fifteen games are marked incomplete shows the stubborn nature of the con-test-rthe number of sealed moves in the lion.' secretary's custody at present being probably a record for the club. The contest for the club championship is now narrowed- down to W. 15. Mason (13 wins, 1 loss) and A. AV. O. Davies (12 wins and. 1 draw). -Non© of tho other competitors can catch Mason's score. Mason has now only to complete Ills fixture with Still (winch was adjourned a fortnight ago in an even state). Davies has to play Barnes (a big hurdle), and has also to complete 'ilis gamo v. Kelling (referred to above). Tlio' next best tallies are:— Barnes, 7f2-J; Kelling, 9-3; James, 4J-2-J; Godtschalk, 5-3; Still, 5-3; and AV. Mackay, SJ-41-A committee meeting was hold on Saturday evening, when it was unanimously decided to send a letter of condolence to Mr. AV. F. Barraud, one of tho club's foundation members, whoso wife died on Friday last.
