New Zealand horses monopolised tho Derby, Itlling tho first lour places, Almoner being fourth. Ulouming was favourite and never' left the issue in doubt. He at once went to tho front and was never headed, although Finmark made a desnorato cllort. .At tho distance Deeloy had little to spare, but Gloaming reßPonued like a chamjion. Rebus created a surprise in the Essoin Handicap by boating the greatly fancied trio Panacro, Publican, and Tho Destroyer. For tho first half milo Killowcn was prominent, but. dropped back. . Bimcter was never forward. Rebus and Norbury fought out a good finish and tho outsider (Rebus) scored. Although tho absence of Biplano and Istland dotracted from tho interest in tho Spring Stakes—which looked n walk-over for Desert Gold—tho race provided tho ■greatest excitement. After practically leading throughout, Desert Gold, ridden by O'Shoa, succumbed to Poitrel'u vigorous challenge Bracken snatching the honours nt the post after a, magnificent finish in record time. Gloaming was first into tho straight from Kilmoon, Outlook, Finmark, and Almoner. At the distance Gloaming came away, and easily stalling of!
