FINANCIAL PANIC IN AUSTRIA The events pi the fifth day of the terrific battle on the Western front, are all in favour of the Allto. In spite of the weather and the mud—Flanders mud—the British and Belgians on the -northern front are steadily manoeuvring for fresh positions ahead of their line, and increasing tho difficulties of the enemy's hold on the Belgian coast region. Already there is more than a hint that the Germans are preparing for a big retreat in Belgium. On the Cam-brai-St. Quentin. front the battle has reached a pitch of terrific intensity., The Germans are said to be fighting with dogged deter-' ruination,' giving the impression that tliey Tealise that their backs are to the wall. The main Hindenburg line is regarded as a mem•ory. • Further along the line the French have reached the Aisne Canal,'and are reported to be pursuing the retreating enemy across the canal. The Americans are m aking good progress in the Argonne. News from the Balkans indicates tho presence of the elements of complications. It is stated that tho pro-Germans in Sofia are trying to engineer a coup d'etat to oust the Malinoff Government and restore the fighting organisation of the Bulgars. There is great political unrest in Germany. The news to-day speaks of an attempt to democratise the Government by arranging a sort of coalition.'' The British have captured D amascus.
