MORE APPEALS
CASES HEARD IN THE CITY
There was another sitting of tho First Wellington Military Service Board in the city Tho board consists of Messrs. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., D. M'Laren, and G. Williams. Tho appeal wae made by the Commissioner of Stamps, who said that another officer of the Department was at present laid up in a private hospital. Deoision avbs reserved, sine die in the case of David Cashman, assistant slip foreman and shipwright, for whom tho Patent Slip Company appealed. It was stated that the company's shipwrights had been reduced from ten to five. The Now Zealand Shipping Company appealed for Alexander Obleraan, carpenter, Wellington.' The Wellington manager, of the company said that at times when' a troopship ( was being fixed up Colomaii had fifty or sixty men. under him. Coleman was responsible for the work of insulating vessels, and if a skilful and experienced man were not employed for that work the dispatch of vessels might.be delayed and cargo might deteriorate. Deoision was reserved sine die, and suspension from military service meantime was granted. J. B. Hanlon, fifth ongineer on an oversea vessel, was appealed for by tho New Zealand Shipping Company, and decision was reserved sine die. Isadore Duncan Shearer, wireless telegraphist, a voluntary recruit, was appealed for end decision was reserved sine die. Decision was reserved sine die in an appeal for Michael Edmond Fitzgibbon, first engineer, of the s.s. Hippie, . for whom an employer's appeal was made. The mother of Lance-Corporal Louis G. Nairn, a soldier on active service, appealed for the'return from the front of her son. The request was not granted. The return to the Dominion of Trooper W. J. Finlayson, a soldier now in Palestine, - was requested by his. mother, on the ground that ,110 was a sole surviving son. He had 1 had four years' service, eo the applicant was advised to' cable to her son suggesting that he should apply to his commander for leave. The mother of A. W. J. Pacey and F. H. Pacey (soldiers on active service) asked for the return of both to New Zealand. Tho board will recommend that the former should be returned on indefinite leave. Respecting the latter, the mother wassinformed that he could apply to his commander for leave. Mrs. Sheppard appealed for leave for her.husband, Edward Austin Sheppard, a saddler, who, , she said, had volmte'ered unknown to her. Evidence was given of A/f.Ji«'; ol shipwrights. Edward Hankey Porters, artist, Wellington, claimed thnt, .he had been wrongly specified—that, ht was a Class C man. The case ".'as adjourned till tho next session of t'ne board. ' Private R.. J. MurHs, ,-inw jn camp, appealed for the exemption of Ambrose Fowler, whom he had placed in charge of a farm when he. went into tjamp. The case was adjourned to Hawera, where the board will hear Fowler. Indefinite leave is to he recommended for Lance-Cbrporal T. It. Capon, a returned soldier, who was wounded and gassed at the front, on condition that his brother enlists when he reaches his nineteenth year. No recommendation was made in the case of Private A. W. Tompkins, a .re-* turned soldier, now in Trentham Camp, who.sought an extension of leave. Albert James Pointon, manager, Potone, appealed on the ground of undue hardship. In the course of his evidence ho stated that he had eight brothers, several of whom were soldiers. The case was adjourned till the next Wellington session' of the board for further information. Leave till December was decided on for Herbert Hodge, iron worker, who was appealed for by his employer. •Ernest Ambrose AUaway, manager of the Wellington Co-operative Society, was appoaled for by the society. J. Read, president, said that the society was the result of an effort on the part of working men, which had , resulted in the establishment of a store in the city which cut out the retailer's profits and thus; reduced the cost of living. Mr. Williams iromarked that the move was a vory good one. Mr. M'Laren endorsed this, and the chairman said that the Venture deserved encouragement. Decision was reserved sine die. Browne, Public Trust'employee, sine, die; E. V. Fowler, leave till November; W. E. Bell and C. E. Little, ship's cooks, sine die; Albert O'Brien, to he medically re-examined; G. F. Newton, waterside worker, leave till January; 0. B. Smith, watersider, adjourned till next session; P. J. Farrow and Hugh Cal'laghan, watersiders, leave till January; J. Wham, grocer's assistant, leave till January. . Inj the cases of. the watersiders whose appeals were heard on Tuesday and are not mentioned above, sine die decisions were given. The board sits again to-day.
