TROOPSHIP EPIDEMIC

PATIENTS "DOING WELL"

THE CAUSE OF INFECTION

INQUIRY BEING MADE

The Minister of Defence lias received further advice concerning the epidemic which caused the death of so many men of the Fortieth Reinforcements on their vovago to England. Sir James Men stated last evening that he had received a cablegram from General Richardson, Commanding the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in the United' Kingdom, in which General Richardson reported that a court of inquiry was being held into the- matter, but as the investigation was not yet complete tho findings of tho Court were not available. He honed to be able to report in a few days. "It appears from this preliminary account which has come to me, but which is not the official report, that the infection did not como from the vessel visiting the last port of call which I have previously mentioned," said the Minister. "The infection arose subsequently to that, and not on account of men having landed there. It seems to have come from a cruiser which was accompanying the convoy. The sickness was not confined to our men, for all the transports in the convoy except one had a large number of deaths. General Richardson thinks "that tho evidence will show that the ship was not overcrowded. "Up to date 74 deaths liavo been reported, 68 men having died at sea and six ashore. There are still 150 in hospital, two of whom are dangerously ill. The others are all doing well and are likely to recover. The sickness is rapifiIγ diminishing. The men are now cheery, and they are being well looked after. General Richardson is granting them all special leave immediately they are free from infection. "General Richardson telegraphs:— '.The New Zealand Expeditionary Fowe in the United Kingdom wish to convey deepest sympathy to relatives of the deceased.' , . , "I have telegraphed to General lvicnardson asking him to report the names of those dangerously ill. and asking him to keep us advised of dangerous or serious cases."

THE LIST OF SICK. The Minister received yesterday the full list of tho names of the men admitted to hospital from the stricken transport. In order that public anxiety, and especially the anxiety of relatives and friends of men on the ship, maybe relieved, he authorised the piiblication of the list immediately, without the customary twenty-four hours' notice, to enable next-of-kin to receive their advice first.
