ONSLOW AND THE GITY
SUGGESTED APPEAL FOR THE MAYOR, 'Tho question of appealing for the exemption of the Mayor of Onsloiv.QJr. J.-JI. Dale) from'military service until the proposal for amalgamation of the borough with the city of Welliuvjron is settled was considered at last night's meeting-of the Onslow Borough Council. Councillor E. Hobbs moved: "That in view of the impending amalgamation of the Onslow Borough with Wellington' city, this council appeal for the exemption of His Worship the Mayor from military Service until March 31 next." ' . , ■ ' ''Speaking to the motion, Councillor Hobbs saifl that it was absolutely es.seutial that the Mayor's services, should be retained until the amalgamation question' had been disposed of, as he was in possession of certain data which could not be passed on to anybody else to handle. "•,,., Councillor Appleton seconded the motion. "If some of you gentlemen would spend yonr energy in pushing the City Council along instead of pushing ive back you would be doing something worth "while," said Mr. Dale, who added that he was against any sort of appeal being made, as his time had come to serve liis country and he ought to be allowed to do his duty. His was not a case of hardship, and it was only in such cases that appeals should be made. "I cannot help thinking that this appealing business is being rather overdono," remarked Mr. Dale. "I know of men who 'wero onco keen in the volunteers who are now sheltering behind employers' appeals, and I have a verv strong objection to doing anything of that kind." In regard to the 'illation of amalgamation, the difficulty seemed to be that tho city wanted to get Miramnr and Karori to conio in at tho same time as Onslow. Hβ could not see the reason for that, and <onsideral that if pressure were brought to bear the city might be induced, to take in Onslow on its own merits. Councillor A. W*. Palmer said he was against appealing. Regarding amalgamation he could not seo how the council could push tho matter forward without further information on tho point. Councillor 15. A. Budd congratulated the Mayor on the attitude he took up on the question of appealing. ' He considered that further pressure should be brought upon the City Council to put the proposal for amalgamation before the ratepayers at once. He moved that tho council meet at 7.30 p.m. on Wednesday next for the purpose of discussing nil matters relating to tho_ question of amalgamation, with a view to speeding forward the proposal. This resolution was carried, and the motion regarding appealing for tho Mayor's exemption wns postponed.
