It is -understood (says the Ohristchurch "Sun") that negotiations are in progress for the purchase by a Duncdin firm of the scow Hazel liepton. owned by Messrs. Brownlee, Ltd., of Kilbirnie, Wellington. Should flic bargain be arranged the vessel will be dispatched to the Straits Settlements with two large boilers 2nd other machinery compl&tcd to the order of a firm of manufacturers near Singapore. As tho vessel would be most suitable for coastal trade in the Straits Settlements, it is probable she may afterwards be put into commission there. On bsinjr shown this report Mr. H. Smith, manager of Messrs. Erownice, Ltd., said that there was absolutely no foundation for it. Messrs. Salmond and Spra&gon yesterday announced that the Tainul was delayed en route from Waiganui to Lyttelton. and in consequence she is not due to arrive here until to-day. Cargo for Napier and Tokomaru Bay will be received until 4 p.m. to-day. The Jlana will call at Wellington on Monday to load for Wanganui.
According to American files there is a. possibility of the American concrete st-ea-mcr Faith vieitipg New Zealand. At the time of the vessel's trial trip it iwis announced that she would take a load of salt to Vancouver, and then load case-oil for New Zealand, returning to America ■with a cargo of wheat from Australia. Any doubts of the seaworthiness of largo concrete vessels were removed, by the tests to which the Faith was subjected. Her trial trip, when sho made over 10 knots, was a surprise even to Mr. W. Leslie Oomyn, tho president of the San Francisco Shipbuilding Company, which constructed the vessel. Tho first sea voyage of tho Faith wae made in sir days of atormy weather. She cleared from San* Francisco on May 22. with a cargo of over 3000 tone of salt. Off tho Golden Gate the vessel tan into a. strone gale and a v very heavy spa. The voyaco was stated to be one of the rmitrhe6t coast voyages on record. The building of concrete ships has been undertaken by ranny companies in America and other countries. The possibilities of concrete vessels being built in New Zealand are wider consideration. It in understood that a, southern shipping firm is going into the matter and arranging details.
