THE MILK PROBLEM
GOVERNMENT ACTION NOT
NECESSARY,
The Hon. G. W. Russell was approached some weeks ago by the City Council Milk Committee with a request f«r Government aid should such prove necessary in bringing into operation improved methods of distribution of milk to the people of Wellington. The Minister tnade some remarks 011
the subject yesterday in reply to a question from Dominion reporter. "So far as I am aware," said the
Minister, "no Government action, is called for at the present time, until the city authorities hare matured their scheme for the division of the city into distribution blocks. When this is prepared a War Regulation will probably be necessary to give effect to ,it, and the Government will bo prepaied to consider favourably any proposals submitted to it by the City Couucil 111 that behalf. lam glad to understand from the chairman of the Milk Committee that it is not anticipated that there will bo any trouble in arranging with the farmers, and consequently it is not necessary to pursue the question of the compulsory purcliase_ of milk from the farmers for the city supply. "In this connection, in casethe city maf have to go farther afield in search of milk, I understand that tho Dominion Analyst (Dr. Maclaurin) is now able to securo the transport of milk for testing purposes from such longdistant places as Gisborne."
