LOWER HUTT BOROUGH

MEETING OIT THE COUNCIL.

The Mayor (Mr. E. P. Rishworth) presided over the mooting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council, held last evoning. There were present: Councillors A. AVest, J. M'Dougall, A. Hobbs, W. Kerr, W. Cotton, W. G. Meldrum, S. G. Clendon, W. "Walton, and J. Brasell.

A letter was received from Mr. Geo. Bird stating that he intended moving from the council's cottage on Main Road, and asking from the council a transfer of the lease to Mr. H. F. Lowe, who also wrote supporting tho application. There was also an ap'plioatioii from Mr. George Webb. It was decided to allow the transfer to Mr. Lowe, and to grant him an extension of three years, subject, to tho council's right of entry at any time.

The Hastings Borough Council wrote asking tlie council to support the resolutions in reference to the refusal of Cabinet to give effect to their proposals affecting enemy aliens. There was a. long discussion on the matter, and it was decided to support the efforts of the Hastings Council.

I .The town cleric, Now Plymouth, wrote asking the council to pass a resolution asking the executive of the Municipal Association to hold a conference. It was decided to give effect to tho request. ' A letter was received from the District Health Officer recommending that certain promises in Main Street- and .Mudie Street, occupied, be pulled down, as they, by reason of their insanitary condition,' are dangerous to public health. It was decided to carry out tho recommendation of the Health Department, and. to give the owners the requisite notire to demolish the buildings.

The secretary of the Board of Trade wrote enclosing a reply from the Coal Trade Committee with respect to the quality and price of coal anct slack supplied in Lower Hutt. The committee went lengthily into the matter, and pointed out that no double-screen-ed coal was now available, and all tho screened coal from the VYost Const mines was taken by the Railway Deportment, and only what could be released by the Department was available to the public.
