IMPORTS FROM AUSTRALIA
INCREASES IN ESSENTIALPRODUCTS. ■ A report prepared by the Government Statistician shows to what an-extent New Zealand has been relying on Australia in recent years for necessary products of tho soil. -.•■•• In 1911) New Zealand imported from Australia-37 centals of wheat, in 1911 72,896 centals, in 1915 48,002 centals, in 191(1 30,005 centals, And in 1917 78,012 centals. The figures for oats are even more stiLvtling-705- centals in 3013, 10.220 in 1914; 4472 in .191.1, 11+.S9A in 1916, and 227,388 in J917. During the- three years 19134-5 New Zealand imported in all 13 centals of barley, worth ten pounds only. In 1916 we imported 58,201 centals, and in 1917 515,'101i centals, or about. ,£5i,000 ■-worth in the two years. Jn the -year. 1916 New Zealand was a heavy importer , of potatoes from Australia, having bought here 2081 tons, worth .€15,695. ' La6t year (he importation of potatoes was ■ negligible, but we did import a considerable quantity of maize, 1463 lons, worth .£0206.
