U-BOAT FAILURE
CONCLUSIVE PROOF IN ' STATISTICS STEADY AND SUBSTANTIAL DROP IN LOSSES ADMIRALTY'S LATEST STATEMENT (Rec. July 25, 7.20 p.m.) London, Julv 24. Conclusive proof of the determinating of the U-boat menace is afforded by the Admiralty's latest statement of the losses in merchant tonnngc. Tito statement reveals the fact that tho total losses of the world's merchant ships for the month of June was 275,020 gross tons, comprising 161,002 British and 114,507 Allied and neutral. These figures show that the monthly di'op in the world's sinkings is 81,90 a tons, as compared with May, 37,780 tons as compared with April, and 125,831 tons as compared with March. All those arc months of this year, whilo compared with the. month of June of last year the world's drop is 437,092 tons. The purely British drops are 04,027 tons as compared with May, 07,005 tons as compared with April, 03,004 ions as compared with March of this year, and 271,333 tons compared with Juno of last year. The losses in tho world's tonnage, ineluding the marine risks, are lower for tho month of Jii.ne, 1918, than for any month since September, 1910. Comparing tho quarterly ueriods, the losses for the three months ending at June are lower than for any quarter since the third quarter of 791(1. The sailings exceed the high level of irecent months.
