OTIRA TUNNEL
REMARKABLE ENGINEERING FEAT.
Last week tho headings of tlio Otira tunnel wero pierced with an iron rod eleven feet in length. This operation proved that the meeting of the iiealey and Otira ends of this big engineering contract was at hand. The work of actually joining the tw.o working parties has been proceeding steadily since, and advice was received last night by Sir William Eraser, .Minister of l'ublic Works, that the join-up had Ixen made most satisfactorily. Tho two parties have connected in a way that must reflect tlio greatest credit on the engineers concerned, and their work must constitute something in the nature of a record. In the actual join-up the alignment was out only three-quarters of an inch, the levels wero out only one and one-eighth inches, and the chaiuage was thirty-six _ inches out. To have calculated suoh n big work to a matter of inches was a remarkable feat.
