MATCH FAMINE IN LONDON
Writing of the match famine in London, u correspondent observes that smokers carry various lands oi lighten! based on Hint and steol, with petrol for tindw, and housewives are beginning to use gae>ligJiters. Thu ordinary gasligjiter consists Ctisunlially of a little cage containing spongy pliiliniim. 'J.'jio spoiifj - platinum acts on the mixture of giw and air as what chemists call a katalytic agent; that is, it causes the gas and oxygen to unite and ignite as they would in the prcsenco of great heat without, itself undergoing any change. The objection to these highly ingenious gaslighters is that they do not act instantaneously, and housekeepers waste a second or so of gas every time they light up. There are now sold in London jjaslightcrs ot Hint and steel which consist ot the usual flint whM'l worked by a Hiring against a tongue of steel, and they light the gas instantly.
