The Copper Trail

The whole of the Wellington contributing area is now thoroughly astir on behalf of the l{ed Cross topper Trail. 'I he collection of unique coins Ims been extended by the audition of a fine collection of old Chinese tokens, the gift of a lady whose brother is a missionary in tiio interior of China. One donation was that of "22 pennies for the toy that is not coming back, and 28 for tlio one that is." Two special Navy League decorations ■have been awarded 'to Afrs. C. E. iUaguiro and ilrs. J. A. Burmestei', for theirservices in connection with the Navy League Relief I'und, states the Auckland "Star." The decorations, which were granted by the Navy League headquarters, in London, were presented on 'luesday by His Excellency the Governor-Gen-eral. '

Mrs. Hart has been ill different parts of tho United Kingdom for nearly eighteen months, and has at different times been doing voluntary work at Walton-on-Thames Hospital. She. also visited France when her husband was very severely gassed.

' The death is reported from Sydney, of' Mrs. Marie Webb, who'.for nlany years resided .011 Wellington Terrace, hut latterly has heen a resident of Sydney. Mrs. Webb, who was of a quiet, retiring disposition, was ihe second eldest daughter of tho late Mr. .Tames .T. Taine (who arrived in New Zealand in 1810), and leaves one son, Mr. Cecil Webb, of the Ocean Accident Assurance Co., Sydney, and a daughter, Mrs. P. J.. Hervey, of Christchurch.

/ Tho employment of women in. the. Postal Department, to replace men was referred to by Mr. R. B. Morris, Chief InspectoV of Post Offices (states the Auckland "Herald"). The Hotorua lied Cross Copper Trail Competition came to ail end last Saturday evening. A sum of ;6U83 17s. lid. was secured.' Tho trail was laid from Whakarewiirewa to Ohiiiemutu, and the Southern team were victorious, planting their Hag at the northern end of the trail at noon on Saturday. Collecting was, however, carried on by both sides until 5 p.m., at which hour the Southern team had raised Ji7st Is. .Id.-and the Northern sido Ji'729 13s. Sd. Tho returned soldiers in Piotorua contributed to the total .£l3O, which was divided equally between the two sides. Of this amount iBO was raised by a soldiers' gala and ,£SO by an art union. A sum of .£3l, the net'procecils of a performance by a band of entertainers knoivn as the Copper Trail Minstrels, was also equally divided between tho two teams. 'L'lie Maoris at Ohinemutu and Whakarewarowa supported the undertaking enthusiastically, and rendered valuable assistance.
