MISSION LECTURE

The Rev. R. Powell delivered a. lecture in Wesley Church, Tnrannki Street, lust evening on his experiences as a Christian Missionor in China. Hβ gave a most interesting account of his journeys and especially of his establishment of a mission cent-e in the town which subsequently became his headquarters. His recital of the interviews he had with Mandarins, ''mall and great, when lu> arrived in the place, were onlighteniu;; as well as amusing. It appeared thnt always tho officials of the Chinese Government were most anxious to warn him of the dangers of tho place, to question his passport, and. generally to make him unwelcome. For all that he stayed and preached, sold literature, and built churches. Hβ sail! that his most ardent wish, which he hoped, soon to fulfil, was to go back to his church, to leave the "foreign devils" in New Zealand, nnd to stay in China until he had worked his day out.
