It is not expected ho will be tried before the middle of August, as the trial of Malvy begins on July 16, and will last at least a month—Aus.N.Z. Cable Assn. M. Joseph Caillaux, an ex-Premier of France, was arrested in Paris on January 11 of this year, and lias been in custody ever since. Tho ex-Minister had been the subject of suspicion almost throughout: the war, bul. the actual ;irrest was due to the discovery, as the result of American investigations, of grave incidents in connection with a visit; ho made lo Argentina with his wife in 1)115. Tim United Stales representative at Buenos Aires had discovered a whole, series of negotiations carried on by Caillaux with the German Foreign Office through the medium of the notorious Count Luxburg, whoso chief claim to fame is his connection witli the campaign of sinking neutral vessels "without leaving a trace," and who on (hat Recount was driven out of the Argentine. The object of Caillaux's manoeuvres in South America was;to engineer a - peace with Germany at any cost, so that international business could be resumed without delay. About tho lime of the arrest, n fresh set of revelations was made, as the result of opening a safe rented by Cailjanx in an Italian bank, the Banca di Sconto, in Florence. In tliis was discovered an extraordinary set ;of document; connected, with Caillaux'ti plans for his political operations after I lie war, when he expected to return to power. Those included u list of prospective Ministers anil a "Mark list" of. politicians and others who would have to bo turned out of office, and another list of successors for these men. 'J here were also important documents of a military uharaotcr. The trial of 13010 i'aslia. and other affairs of the kind showed that Cailiaiu was connected with nil the chief iiro-lierman activities 'in France. M. Maivy. who was Minister of tho Interior in 1917, is charged with treason in connection with the betrayal lo Hie enemy, of the I'raich plans for tho ofi'en-sivo-in the Chemin des Dames.
