All thoso who desire tho possession of really attractive works of art by an established artist should certainly not miss the opportunity of inspecting the pictures by Mr. J. Douglas Porrett, of Auckland, nnd others by artists of proved ability now on view at llarcourts rooms, which are to bo sold by auction at 1.30 p.m. on Wednesday next. llr. Perrett'a 'work is- very well known in Wellington, and it is safe to say that his reputation will bo enhanced by the fine selection-of paintings which gladden tho walls of Harcourt's sale-room. His clean, straightforward bntshwork, delicacy of treatment, and nice colour-sense are apparent in every canvas. _ The pictures include delightful oil paintings ot now views of Lake To Anau and Manapouri, each tellingly atmospheric, 'lwo unique paintings (from old sketches) are tho paintings of the buried pink una white ten - aees of Holoiiiahaua, which mitko a capital pair of some historic value, which would bp well placed lira Stato gallery. No. (55. "A Mountain Greek," is strongly painted-ra delightful bush glen, backed by a tumbling torrent of "animated water. Another be.nltil'ul.canvas is -No. 21, "Morning, Itangitoto Channel," which admirably; suggests the clean sweet air of dawu ill Auckland Harbour. Another line bit of colour is the painting of the "Ship "Rocks, Lake Waikaremoana." (No. 21). In another vein is a livo seascape (No. 59), "Fishing Bocks, Kara Kare,".in which a big green curler has been cleverly caught just before it breaks. There are also two desirable little canvases, by C. .11. Howarth; n fine sketch of . a lad's head liy Nerli (one of the Pupal artists), a large, broadly-conceived sketch by Hlyth Fletcher, and a very, fine painting, "Tho Old Church, Rouen," by tho same capable arlist.
