EDUCATION BOARD
A SERIES OF CONTESTS. The torrent of talk and comment on ■matters educational during the past year is ovidently having its effect on tho publio mind, if ono may judge from the number of nominations received for tho vacancies on l:he Wellington Education Board. These closed yesterday, and tho result will l>o a series of contests for every sent, biivc one. It should be made clear that the wholo of the members of tho hoard do not retire. Only two city members retire automatically (the Hon. J. G. W. Aitken and Mr. Thos. Forsyth), but an extraordinary vacancy has been created, in the city's representation by tho voluntary retirement of Mr. William Allan (after sixteen years' Rcr,vice). In tho case of Hie rural districts one (of the two) members for Hutt-Petone, Hutt-Horowhenua, Wairarana, and Marlborough resigns automatically. Tho nominations received to fill tho vacancies caused by tho automatic retirement of the Hon. J. (j. W. Aitken, M.L.C., and Mr. Thos. Forsyth, nro as follow:— - ' Forsyth, Thomas. I Shand, Joseph Paterson. Evans, Frederick John. Clark, J. ,T. For tho extraordinary vacancy (caused by Mr- Allan's resignation) :— Fyffe, William Kington. Evans, ■ Frederick Charles. . Shand, Joseph Paterson. HUTT AND PETONE. London, George Thomas (retiring member)— He-elected unopposed. HUTT-HOROWHENUA. Murray;, Alexander (Levin). Petrie, Fredk. Herbert (Johnsonvillc). Holms, Archibald Crawford. y MARLBOROUGH. -M'Calhini, Eichard (retiring member). Cooke, Bernard James. Tho election will toko place on July 17, but in cases where there is iv contest the count will not takp' place until July 111 (a statutory arrangement which provide.* a period of H days for postal voting). As the Hon. J. G. W. Aitken is retiring iiltojcther from the board, it will be necessary for the new board, : at its first , meeting, to elect a new chairman. It is understood that there is likely to be more than ono aspirant for that important, office.
