Tho fact that tho term of his appointment as Governor-Goueral has been extended was referred to by His Excellency at an Orphans' Club gathering 011 Saturday ovening. lie said he had boon in New Zealand for fivo years and a half, and had largely exceeded the average period for which a. representative of the Sovereign remained in any of the Dominions. Thoso who had sent him to New Zealand had thought fit to ask him to remain longer, aud ho considered it a gront honour aud privilege to represent King and Empire in New Zealand at a period like the present. Ho was glad to have been able to help in New Zealand's patriotic endeavours. Referring to _ tho progress of the war the Earl of Liver-, pool said the end did not appear to be likely 'in 1918. He had no more information in respect to this n-cttcr than any other person. Possibly it would not bo' in 1919. 111 1915 the eneiny thought the battle was to the strong and the race to tho swift; in 1918 and onwards tho battle would lie to tho strong. Perseveranco and determination would see the Allies through to the end.
