HOW HE ESCAPED
• Hi : —- ■ A "TOMMY'S" LITTLE WAY WITH ■ HIS BOCHE CAPTOi'w. Renter's special correspondeait" on the British- front in the West tells the following little slwy to-day as illustrating 'the spirit of tho men: . "In-a recent night raid against our posts two parties of OiormaJis, of twenty strong, and another -of thirty strong, came over disguised with spectacular frightfulncss. They'wore .hideous masks, black shirts, and overalls, and each man carried a'great dagger and an automatic pistol. In -fact, tho whole expedition looked like a phantasy of the old Inquisition. The garrisons of tho attacked posts .put up a sturdy defence, and tho black .raiders woro compelled to retire. They took with thorn ono of our men, whom they had captured, and who was escorted by a burly Hun with his pistol and dagger poised. Presently, however, on getting separated from tho main body,- this 'Tommy,' quite undismayed by tho terrible appearance of his captor, quietly raised his hand to tho- brim of -his shrapnel helmet, and then, ■ snatching •it frOm' off his head, brought its' sharp edge down with such .ti tremendous cnuck upon his German captor's skull- that tho latter collapsed like a log."
