THE MOTOR-CAR ARRANGEMENTS
VOLUNTARY CORPS FORMED
On the arrival of more recent transports and hospital shijx, bringing wounded men thero have been complaints fibout the arrangements mado for tho carriage of tho men from the wharvca in tho motor-cars provided by private citizens for this, purpose. The complaints were . not - without reason, and the authorities havo taken steps to set things in order.
A meeting of motor-car owners woa convened by the Mayor for yesterday afterjioon, and about 30 ladies nnd gentlemen attended. Tho Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) presided. After some general reference.,) to the need for some organisa-
tion for tho reception of the men and providing conveyances for them, ho submitted tho following motion:—"That it is desirable that an organisation should bo established for tho purpose of providing tho means" of conveyance of returned soldiers from the Wellington wharves and railway stations to their destinations in Wellington oity and suburbs."
Liouteiinnt-Colonel Boberts, who represented the Defence Department, seconded the motion. Hβ said tliat in future the arrangements would bo better, mid the people coming with ' their cars would have little, to complain about. There might be a difficulty about some owners getting benzine, but that difficulty wouid be met. Every member of the- corps turning out for this duty would be able to get from the Defence Stores a tin of benzine at cost price. Mr.' L. K. Partridge spoke strongly of muddles in the past, but said that all motorists would bo glad to help if thene muddles. could be ended. The motion was carried. Mr. \V Pryor then moved the following rules for the corpa to be formed:— 1. That the name shall be the Wollington Voluntary- Motor Corpa. 2. That any motorist will bo eligible for. membership who agrees to be available for service for the purpose of providing means of conveyance of returned soldiers from the Wellington wharves nnd railway stations to their* destinations in Wellington city and suburbs, ut any time when called upon by the secretary. In tho event of unforeseen circumstances preventing, a member from performing a duly when called upon such member shall be responsible to arrange for another motorist to act for him. ' 3. That a register should bo prepared allotting a,miniber to each member and showing ttie business and private telephono numbora of 'members. i. That tho organisation shall adopt an arm' badge with the letters -V.M.C. over a number, and each member shall r>e provided with it badge bearing his or her registered number. 5. Tho badge to bp- worn at right side at all times khen a member is on duty. Tho riiijfs were adopted. • Officers were elected as follow:—Chairman the Mayor of Wellington; organiser, Captain W. Pryor; executive, the Mayor, Lieutonant-Cplonel Roberts, Captain Pryor, Mr. L. K. Partridge, and Mr H. Lloyd; secretary, Mr. H. J. Stott. . .
