MAGISTRATE'S COURT

PETTY THEFT CASES. ■ Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., presided over a sitting of the Magistrate's Court yesterday. A young married man named Percy Marshall Dronlield pleaded guilty to the. charge of stealing about 2801b. of scrap lead, valued at .S3 10s., and lUlb. solder, valued at 235., the property'of Jones and Co. Inspector Marsack explained that the man had been i employed by Jones and Co., and it ras his practice to steal the metals bit by bit, and when he had accumulated a quantity ho sold tho lot to a eecond-hand dealer for X 2 12s. Gd. He was fined A in. default U days' imprisonment. . James Hamilton Glover was charged that on December 17, at Wcllinton, he did commit, theft of a. Post Office money order valued at ,£1 55., the property, of Alexander M'Stay. Mr. P. W. Jackson appeared for accused, and on his behaif pleaded Siilty. Chief Detective Boddam stated that the accused and tho complainant were fellow-clerks at tho time. The complainant wrote a letter to George and ( George and enclosed the money order. This was dono in the presence of the accused, who was requested to post the letter. Instead of doing this he abstracted the money order and later cashed it. Ho was now working at Jiangi* tumiiu, and it was understood his employer was ijilling to take him back. ■Mr. Jackson said the accused admitted that it was a very mean theft, and was willing to make restitution, if given tho opportunity. Tho accused was fined 405., in default seven days' imprisonment, aud was ordered to refund the amount stolen. A remand to appear at Wanganni ou June 5 was grffoted in the case of A. B. Sandersffi, who was charged that lit Wanganui nlxnit May 25 ho did obtain goods and cash to the value of .£2B from M'Gruer and Co., by means of a false protonce, to wit, a valueless cheque, with, intent to defraud. A man, a first offender,' who was found drunk in Manners Street, was convicted and ordered to pay 17s. Cd. mcdieai expenses. A seaman who was nmvttcil for driinkennoss was convicted and ordered to be placed on board his vessel, nnd another first offender was convicted and discharged.
