DAY'S BAY WHARF

AND THAT SHELTER SHED. The Day's Bay people want a shelter shed on their wharf. They have a very activ) association of ratepayers in their suburb, and this association has tried everywhere to find some local authority who will pay for this shelter. The Harbour Board was not disposed at first, so the association went to the Eastbourne Borough (which owns tho ferries), to tho City Council (which owns the Park), and to Hutt County (in which the suburb is situated). All refused to l<ay. ' The association came back to the Harbour Board, and the letter was before the meeting last night. The request nas modified in this respect, that whereas formerly it was for a closed room, to cost ,£!CS, the amended suggestion was for an open shed like that on the city side. Again the board was unsympathetic. Sir. M'Ewan aud Mr. Welch suggested that the board might offei the association pound for pound, and for their {ains these tivo gentlemen were twitted about that idle wharf at l'etone. The proposal was negatived on the voices. The argument was that tho* hoard had no liability. Already the wharf had cost .-SMOOO for repairs and renewals, and tho total revenue from Day's Bay and Eastbourne was JCSOO a year. Members considered that the burden should be borne either by the. city or by the owners of tho ferries (Eastbourne Borough).
