AUSTRALIAN WHEAT FOR AMERICA

PROPOSALS TO UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT. (Rec. May 30, 0.50 a.m.) Washington, May 28. The United States Government is considering proposals by Australia for the shipment of Australia's surplus wheat to America. The Government 16 nnxLous to obtain tho wheat if the shipping is eecurable. The present prospects for the American hnrvest are good, but adverso weather may unfavourably affect the outlook. Whether the harvest bo good or unfavourable the Australian surplus will bo most acceptablo, and will enable America to make larger shipments to tho - Allies. One proposal is for tho utilisation of tho ships ordered From ,I'apau, when these vessels. are en ronto to America. Another scheme submitted by Austva.lia provides for an adjustment of shipping whereby practically all the fast Pacific ships will be • diverted ,to *ho Atlantic, while slower vessels in tho Atlantic will ho used on safe Pacific routes. Tt is recognised thqt speedy, ships are the greatest protection against submarines, whereas an increased number of slow snips could safely and effectively convey wheat to America. It is bclioved that certain shipping interests are disinclined to support the latter scheme. The American Government lias not yet declared its attitude.—Aus.-N.Z. Cablo Assn.
