A HERO OF THE HALIFAX DISASTER
BEITISII OFFICER'S SELFSACRIFICE. Tlie King lias approved the posthumous award of the Albert Medal in gold to Lieutenant-Commander (Acting Commander) Tom Kenneth Triggs, E.N. ; and of the- Albert Medal to Able Seaman William Bocker. On December G last tho French steamer Mont Blanc, with a cargo of high explor sives, and the Norwegian steamer Imo were in collision in Halifax Harbour, ■when a fire broke out on the former. The captain of H.M.S. Highflyer, which was about a mile away, eent off a boat to see if anything could be done to prevent loss of life, and Commander Triggs volunteered. He was pulled in tho ship's whaler towards tho bows of the Imo, which was about 300 yards from tho Mont Blanc, to pass a line from her to a tug, ■when tho explosion occurred.
Of the seven people in the whaler only Able Seaman Bocker was rescued alive on the Dartmouth shove, whither he had swuiii. The remainder perished.
The Albert Medal has also been awarded to Leading Seaman Thomas N. Davis, 0.N0.J.13331 Dev., and Able Seaman Hobert Stones, O.NJ.WB Dev., for gallantry on the same occasion.
