MASTER STROWAN WINS THE HIO STEEPLECHASE. (By Telegraph-Special Correspondent.) Wanganul, May 25. On tho second day of tho Waugnnui Jockey Cub's Winter Meeting there wero heavy showers, but there was n. largo attendance notwithstanding. The amount nut through tho totalisator was £57,2C4, making a. total of £71,937 for the meeting, as against £54,223 last year. Stareiißo and Coropett, were miesing when tho field paraded for the Winter Oats Handicap. Lady Black and Lady General wero the best backed. At tho start Form Up moved off quickly, but llyginas soon took charge, and at the half-milo ho bad o. break ou the field. Rounding the bend Lady Black ran into fccond place, followed by C'oolpan and Rawakore. Hyginas hold his advantage in the run homo, and won easily from' Rawaliore, who beat Movement by a neck. Lady General and Coolpan were the nest to finish.

Tho courso was in a very heavy ptato for tho next race. Paddington Green led to the six furlongs, ivhero ho was steadied, and Wiuninj Shot carried on tho runnius from Sardinia. The last named took charge round tho bend, but Paddington Green was first into the straight. Glucian then camo fast, and soon put tho issue beyond doubt, -winning by a couplo of lengths. Sardinia was third, and Winning Shot next. Lord Nelson .ran very badly, and was one of the last to flnuh. . Contrary to expectations Master Sitrowin was allowed to take his place in tho big Steeplechase aud he saddled up remarkably well. Mai'ton was a better favourite than tho Foxton repreeentattve. At tho first fence tho latter nearly came down, and ho lost a lot of sround. Over tho first mile- Arlington and Diavolo wwo just clear oi Bore and Itarton. With the last round entered upon Ulavplo was in trouble, and floro joined Arlington and Marlon in tho lead, with Sandy Paul moting up. Arlington shook Boro and ilarton oft', but when tho last quarter was entered upon Master Strowan ran to the front and Boon had a break on the Deld. Hβ won very easily from Sandy Paul with lioro next, and Arlington fauiih. Tho others were strung out. The winner sot a great reception, the crowd recognising tho merit of the performance. A big field Btartod in the Hack Hurdles, but speculation wao confined to Paul Moore and Gang Awa , . Hupana led fora milo, when Gang Awa , and lieformation went out in the front. Tho latter could not see it out, and Gang Awa' won easily from Waioture, who beat Fionnuala by a, narrow margin. Paul Mooro was fourth. Purseflller and Golden Glade divided the. machine honours in tho Hay Hurdle.*. The former and Kauri Kiug wero fractions at tho barrier, and delayed the start. When the tapes rose they got off badly and Lord Ainslio led for a milo, whoro Puraefillcr and Kauri Kins moved up. Thoy jumped, the last fence together, but tho mare had most in reserve, and In the ran home won by a couple of lengths. Colorado was.a poor third and tko--re-mainder wore strung out badly. Tolo was favourite in the Eraniro Handicap, and he won more easily than on the opening day, Ooropett led for about six furlongs, with Rudo and Hydrue at tho head of the others. Entering the- ftraieht Volo ran to tho front, and Lady Louisaalso showed up. Volo won decisively, while All Over finished on well, and boat Lady Louisa. Tho remainder were strung out, tho fleW being whipped by Welcome Nugget and Hydnis. Considering his success here it looka as if tho connections of tho winner were unlucky to miss tho acceptances for Otaki.' Tho coßc'lading event went to tho I'or-doll-owned Endure, who beat Plying Gowrle by a narrow margin. Melita, who was a good favourite, shaved badly in the going.
