HIDES AND TALLOW SALES
BBOKERS , REPORTS. The fortnightly sales of hides and taTlow were held yesterday by tho various brokers. Jleaurs. Dalgety and Co., Ltd., submitted a fair catalogue before a Email attendance of buyers. As a result, competition was not very keen, but prices were good, and for the hides and calfskins ■were about Id. per lb. higher, and for tallow about Iβ. per cwt. higher, ae compared with last sale rates. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., offered a fair catalogue. Prices for hides and calfskins were somewhat higher than last sale, but tallow was not keenly competed for. " Messrs. Levin and Co., Ltd., report a good attendance of buyers and keen competition. As compared with tho commandeer 'prices better-grade hides showed an advance of '.' to h?.. per lb., while light and medium-weigh'-, hides ruled eaeier to the extent of Id. to lid. Calfskins -were in keen demand, "at prlcea ranging from Id to 25d. per lb. over tho prices givan under tho Government requisition. Messrs. Murray, Roberts, and Co., Ltd., submitted a catalogue totalling 1000 hides. Competition from both tanners and exporters was free, and for lines of good oi hides exceedingly keen, and the firm cleared their catalogue at prices ruling from }d. to 3d. per lb. lower for cow hides, and Jd. to Id. higher for best sound ox. Calfskins sold at rates established last sale, with animated comtietiI tion. The firm topped the marltct with 13Jd. per lb. for a fine lot of 821b. stout ox hides in superior condition, a line of 741b. making Uid. The Wairarapa Farmers' Co-operative Association. Ltd., with which is incorporated the United Farmere' Co-operative Association, report that prices for ox hides were timer; cow hidea and cnitßkiue on a par with last sales. Tallow was weaker.
Moßsvs. Abraham and Williams, Ltd, report that they offered a large catalogue of hides and' calfskine and tallow, and there wau a keen demand for all classes. Super heavy and medium ox were very keenly competed for at prices well above the Government requisition schedule. Light ox were about on a par with last sale. Heavy cows showed a- alight improvement, being about Jd. better; medium cows wore , down about 5d.. and light cows were on a par. Calfskins, although the bidding was keen, wore down about Id. Tallow, compared with last sale, wae on a par. The rango of prices was as follows:— Hides: Ox, heavy, Hid. to ttUL: 01, medium, IOJd. to 12d.; ox, light, BJd. to IOJd.; cow, heavy 93d. to IOSd.; cow. medium, 83d. to 9Jd.; cow, light, 7d. to 93d.; cut, slippy, and inferior. 6d. to BJd-: bull, stag, 6L<l. to 9d.; yearlinsce, 9d. to Hid.; calf, superior, 13Jd. to 15Jd.; calf, medium to good, Bd. to Mgd.; calf, damaged, <ld. to 113(1.
