Field Artillery, was admitted to hospital in Franc'e on May 12 suU'cring from fractured metacarpal. He left New' Zealand with.' the Tenth Reinforcements, and after ft short service he was removed to hospital Ito be operated on for appendicitis. Hβ was later appointed to .the. K.Farquhar, surveyor,'.of the head office, lands ami Survey Department, was.the recioient from tlie L'nder-Secretary and stuff of a token- of their esteem on the eve of his -entering a well-earned' retirement after a period of forty years' faith- . fill service. In 1878 Mr. Farquhar joined -■ {he- Survey staff in Nelson. A few years, ■ later he .qualified as a surveyor, and 'duties were assigned him in the field under Mr. i. D. B. Murray, then District Surveyor in thn Nelson district. Fromthis experience Mr. Farquhar was next placed in charge of a> parly and sent to the Otago district, where his careful and accurate work -gained hii.u well-deserved merit.
