SAILORS' FRIEND SOCIETY

An enjoyabie conse.-i- was m-rauged for the seafarers at the Sailors' Friend Society by Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Carr on Tuesday. Yooa.l, instrumental, and elocutionary items were given by Mrs. S. Hampton and Miss 0. Chilsh'om, and Messrs. J. AV. Carr, T. Hills, W. Smith. Encores were constantly demanded and freely given. Mr. J. 11. Carr was at the piano. Mr. Moore, missioner, spoke on "Why Should Wβ Sign tho Pledge?" Hospitality was provided by Mr. E. Tonks.

The Red Cross kitchen in the old Post Office at Diuiedin is proving a marked success (states tiic "Star"). The takings have so fur averaged from c£2s to XW per week. A sale of eatables and other goods is held ever}- Saturday, and on other week days the kitchen is busy in executing orders tor cakes, pies, ami all sorts of things for the table or for ii lunch in one's office. Numbers of business men who caunot gut home .in tho middlo of tho iluy ring u> during tho morning asking to be supplied with, say, a bottle of hot soup or a frie.il flounder at a. certain hour, and -'whatever ii ordered is ready at tho appointed lime. Two large gae >;ookers are kept going, and there is work for a third. Tho only drawbacks to the kitchen arlangemeiits is that there, is hardly enough room in tho present premises.

Tho Wellington letter-carriers have decided to hold a plain and fancy dress .and poster bail at the Town Hall, in aid of tlio Letter-Carriers' Baby .in the Hod Cross-Bed Jersey competition.

The large number of soldiers who attend the weekly dances at the Soldiers C\\\b in Sydney Street are evidence as to the popularity of these entertainments, and that of last night was no exception to the general rule'. The Hutt ladies were in charge of the tea room, and tho customary arrangements were carried out in connection with tho dancing.
