MR, JAMES GORDON BENNETT. Now York, May 14. James Gordon Bennett, proprietor of the Now York, "Herald," is dead, at the ago of 77 years—Aus.-N.Z. Cablo Assn. [James Gordon Bennett is known to the public principally as tho donor of the, Gordon Bonnett Cup for 'international motor-racing; but in the world of journalism he occupied a unique position achieved By his originality and enterprise, not to mention tho eccentricities of his private life. Tho "Herald" was founded by his father in 1835, and tho " younger Bennett succeeded to tho control in 1872. Ho has since been active in the direction of his'paper, though residing in Paris and conducting hie business mainly by cable. For souio time lie published a London edition of the "Herald," and now a Paris edition is also issued. His most notable enterprise was >' the commissioning of H. M. Stanley to find Livingstone ml IS7M7. Thie enterprise, undertaken at Bennett's expense, was inaugurated with thb characteristic laconic message. "Find Livingstone." In 1879 Bennett fitted out tho Jeannetto Polar Expedition. With John W. Mno kay he ostablished tho Commercial Cable Company (Mackay-Bennett Cable) in 1883. He inaugurated the publication ia England of storm warnings transmitted from America. At ono timo ho was ft foremost figure in the yachting world. Hβ won the race from Sandy Hook to the Islo of Wight with hia yacht Hen- . rietta in 18GG.1
