ONSLOW AFFAIRS

MEETING OF COUNCIL. A meeting of Ihe Onelow Boroagh Council was held last night, when there were present-.-The Mayor, Mr. J. M. Dale, and Councillors E. A. Budd K Hobbs, P. F. Hodgson, B. G. Tucker, A. B. Topp, A. AV. Palmer, and J. t. Gardner. The estimates for the year ending March 31, 1919, were presented. Iho total estimated expenditure was shown as £2595 17s. 3d., and the receipts £874 10s., leaving an amount required of £1/21 7s. 3d. The principal items of expenditure, aptirt from salaries, were e3timat-. Ed as follow:—Street maintenance and works, £1291; maintenance Hutt Boad, £250; and liability to Wellington City Council for water, £52 Is. Chief among anticipated receipts were the following: —Credit balance, general account, as at March 81, 1918, £289; Government subsidy on rates, £190; outstanding water accounts, £SS; outstanding rates, £69; grazing rates, catchment area, £52; aid 5 per cent, charges loan rates account administration, £52 10s. The balance-sheet for. the year ended March 31, 1918, was also presented,-and shoved a credit in tho general account of £2C8,175. 2d.- ' . Discussion of the estimates and bal-ance-sheet .was postponed until next meeting. Consideration of (he question of rates to be struck for ;he current year was aleo deferred until next meeting. The Mayor stated' that it was not intended to execute any works of a special nature.

: The engineer, in his report, drew attention to the very unsatisfactory condition of several of the water meters in Kaiwarra. Tour were, and had fortsomo time been, "standing," whilst the boxes of no fewer than 22 wore out of repair. It wis decided to rail upon the owners of. the four meters referred to to effect an improvement within fourteen days. The ranger roportod that April was tho cleanest month he had experienced as regards wandering cattle, he, having to record only two jmpoundings.
