DESERTER'S PATHETIC STORY.

Laii<fley, a deserter, at OM Street Police Court recently plradcd guilty to stealing a quantity of nmu, value KM, the property of his employer, Mr. John Davis, Spit.ilfMcK A police officer said that the prisoner was promoted on the battlefield from a private to a serjfea'it for bravery. Langley produced his Military Medal, and explained that ho deserted in March, when, on his return home on leave, he discovered that hw ~; had been living with another man. "Host all heart and all contro of myjnlf then " lie explained with a break in hi 3 voice. Ho added that he was a quar-termaster-sergeant when he dcsertnl. Hβ was promoted for taking command of a party of 52 meu sent to capture o German pill-box after hie captain and sergeant had been killed. Only, a few o the farty returned, and he churned to.have been the first ..Dritish soldver to blow up an enemy pill-box. He applied for an opportunity to go back to Uβ Army. The Magistrate -aid !.e would not send such a brave toldier to prison, and di• recbld that he should be hauded over to the military authoritiee.
