MANY A SLIP
THE I.W.W. BOUND TO. When an American mail steamer was abeut to leave San Francisco for Sydney recently, the secret service men made a rakl ni passengers' luggage. Information had been received that as a result of a round-up by the police, members of the I.W.W. were attempting to get a passage to Sydney,, and the authorities were determined not to allow anyone to get awa>. They had a fairly good description of those wanted, and the examination had not proceeded far when the detectives dropped upon what they regarded as an interesting find. One of the suspected men belonged to Sydney, where his family now resides, and the information m possession of the secret service was tuch as to lead' to the belief that ho was recruiting on behalf 'of the I.W.W. When certain that they had the right man. the detectives took him to a quiet corner of the ship aud searched his clothes and baggage. The first papers found were something new in I.W.W. propaganda, which it is believed were intended, for Australia. A further search revealed a plan of a saloon in Honolulu, together with directions for the bearer to find his way from the wharf to the meeting place of the organisation. The plan of the inEn'de of the building > showed how to find the particular room'where the meetings were held. There were also other papers from American branches to the Honolulu section. Having secured sufficient evidence to warrant arrest, the detectives removed the Sydney man from the ship and placed him in custody. On the same boat a man who, claimed ito be a Socialist was put ashore. The I literature found in baggage was of [ such a nature as 'likely to cause disj stn.fion amongst the people," and. as I there is a regulation against the carrying j of such matter, he was placed under arrest.
