A sharp frost—the first, of the seasonwas experienced in Masterton yesterday morning. Potatoes, pumpkins, and other vegetables suffered. Two remits passed at the annual meeting uf the .Masterton branch of the Farmers' Union on Saturday were as follow:—"That tho Government be requested to givo wire, wire-netting, staples, Kool-piicks, and corn-sacks preference in shipping space over luxuries, and supply to soldier settlements and new holdings at the lowest possible rates." "That the old system of chaff-cutting per ton be reverted to, instead of per 6ack as at present"."

The takings, on Saturday at th'e Masterton Patriotic Shop, which was _ in charge of the ladies of the Wainuioru and Taueru districts, amounted to .CIB3 ."is. 3d. The proceeds are in aid of the Salvation Army appeal. Tho Masterton Golf Club opened its season' on Sa'fcijday last. A mixed foursome was played, the. best card handed in being by Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Dawson. The Mauricoville Dairy Company has decided to instal casein plants at its Mauriceville and Hastwells factories.

An Anzac memorial service is to be held in the King's Theatre, Carterton, on Thursday afternoon. It will be conducted by the several ministers of Carterton, the Mayor presiding, and the singing will lie led by the combined choirs of the churches. Chaplain Archer, of the Tauherenikau Camp, will 'give an address, and the whole 6ervico is not to exceed an hour.

During the past week the Carterton branch of tho Lady Liverpool Committee dispatched a box of extras for the patients of the Featherston Military Hosnital. The branch also dispatched to Wellington 45 muslin shirts, 19 hol'dalls, ami 12 housewives.

The ordinary meeting of the general committee of the Wairarapa Automobile Association was held in CaTterton 011 Friday night, Mr. W. Howard Booth presiding. The treasurer reported a credit balanoe at the Bank of New Zealand of M'l 18s. 1 ; on deposit P.O.S. Bank, -£5i life. 4d.; War Loan Certificates (face value ,£6O), .MS. The accounts in connection with the Greytown by-laws case > were passed for payment, and at tho ] same time a vote of thanks was passed i to members of (he association who acted I as witnesses in the case. Messrs. G. H, Golyer (Kaikaiwai) and F. B. Vallance (Masterton) were elected members of the association. , Mr. T. E. Maunsell, vicepresident, wrote resigning his position on the committee 011 account of leaving the district.. The resignation was accepted with regret, and appreciation was expressed for the work he had done in the interests of the association. Pleasure was expressed that Mr. Maunsel! was still remaining a member of (lie association, and a resolution electing him a life member was carried. It was decided that a farewell be tendered to Mr. Maunsell. Mr. H. A. Bunny was elected to fill the vice-presidency, and the vacancy 011 the committee is to be filled at the next meeting. A dangerous railway crossing near the Opaki racecourse was mentioned, and it was decided to ask Mr, Oliver Bunny, of "Waipipi," if he would consent to painting the posts of his fence white, so that they could easily bo picked up by motorists' lights 011 a dark night.
