N.Z. BHIPPIXfi SHORTAGE. There has been for a lone while at Lyttolton a, shortage of shipping space ■ and tonnage, but this last week or two the position in regard to shipping has becomo aoiito. A "Sun" representative saw a prominent agent for merchants at Ijyttelton, who expressed his opinions on the unsatisfactory position that at present existed. "The demand for space," said the agent, "in mostly for the East Coast of (ho Xorth Island, where cocksfoot and grass seed, as well as flour and other necessary commodities, are urgently required. People are clamouring for the goods to bo sent, and as tho season is getting late grass seed iB especially wantod, but it cannot be supplied on account of the scarcity of tonnage." In answer to a question as to what was really supplied to these merchants in the North Island, the agent stated that approxlmatnly only 25 per cent, of the actual requirements were dispatched. Shippers of grass seed are beginning to complain that certain unnecessary lines are allowed to be shipped, one of these being beer. Fi> r instance, a steamer leaving for the north on Friday carried 22 tons of beer, which is equal to 250 Backs of cocksfoot. The agent thought it time' that the Government stepped in and instructed tho shipPlug companies to givo preference lo essential cargo. "Some merchants arc actually shipping cargo to Wellington and railing it to its destination, right up as far as Auckland, having to pay double the freight of the .steamer." Two other firms having connection with the shipping of produce expressed the same feeling as the ngent. In regard to the above, an incident should be cited. On lapt Saturday afternoon the agent for the Defender decided to invite cargo for Wellington, and he wnß rushed with applications, the ship being loaded with produce by one iii'm early on tho Morning morning.
NEW YORK SHIPPING TRADB. A few weeks ago a cable message from New York intimated that there was a scarcity of tonnage for Australia, and that as a result trade we hampered. Mr. G. A. Line, at Sydney, on April 19, received it cablegram stilting tltat conditions -were improving, and that, several vessels had been approved by the Shipping Board to take the berth- at New York for Australian ports. The Jlapourika arrived at Auckland at 8 a.m. on Saturday, and is to' leave tonight direct tor Wellington. The Union Company advise that, if will dispatch Bteamers for Timaru to-day and Onehunga to-morrow. Mr, \V. J. .Taquiery. purser on the Coriuna, has come ashore '
