. MANAWATU MEETING SCRATCHING OF BIPLANE STEWARDS MOVE IN THE MATTER DESERX COLD WINS COI.D CUP. By Telegraph—Press Association. Palmerston North, April 17. Tho first day of the Manawatu autumn racOß was bold in perfect weather, 'liiero was a record attendance for an autumn meeting:, largo, fields and good racing. There was great disappointment at tho scratching of Biplauo in the Bold Oup, toe crowd hooting horse, ownor, and trainer for sonio time beforo the race. Desert Gold received a great ovation, and Mr. T. H. liowry waß carried shoulder high after the presentation of tho cup. The following resolution was carried by the stewards in connection with the 6cratchiu!r of Biplane•The stewards consider that the explanation of Mr. Greenwood and his trainor, R. J. Mason, of the scratching of Biplane on tho eve of tho race entirely unsatisfactory. They aro further of opinion that an occasion has arisen which is contemplated by the provisions of sub-section 11, part 4, of tho rulea of racing, inasmuch, as whilst tho letter of tho law haß not been infringed, the true ethics of racing have been grossly violated. Tho stewards regTet that the provisions of sub-sec-tion 11 do not authorise them to disqualify Biplane for tho meeting, but they recommend tho committee of tho j Manawatu Racing dub to cxeroiso its ! power under sub-section 3. of part 16, 6hould occasion arise, and to decline all future nominations from Mr. Greenwood of any of his horses, or of any horse which may he trained by R. J. ■ Mason. Tho following resolution was also carried:—"That all bets on tho Awapuni Gold | Cup recorded prior to tha scratching of i Biplano be declared cancelled." The scratching incident spoilt what must havo otherwise been a record meeting. Tho totalisator handled £45,913 during tha | day, as against £18.002 for tho samo day ! last year, when tho meeting was held in | May. . fSnb-section 11 of part 4 of the Rules of Racing reads: "If any case occum which in their opinion is not provided for in , these rules, it shall be determined by tho | stewards in such manner as they think I fit." Sub-seotion 3of part 16 Bays:'"Thß ! stewards or committee may, with or with- | out reason assigned, refuse any entry."] I The following are the results:— ; KARERE HURDLES, of 200 sovs. One i mile and three-quarters. i 5 Sir Fisher, list. 81b (A. NOTES ON THE RACING

(By Telegraph-Special Correspondent.} Palmerston North, April 17. Incitement rim high .it Awapuni to-day, and the. scenes witnessed there have not taken place on any racccourso in.the Dominion. •' ,: Tho Judicial Coniinitteo met several times. After tho Hurdloo they innuired into tho running of Eeoord, who was shod with heavy shoes in pluco of tho ordinary plates. Thon the Biplane connections wero called in, and tho very advorso motion passed was the subject of much comment throughout the day. The exhibition or Ibex, favourite in the 'Woodhcy Hack Handicap, was also gone into and was adjourned. Vacuum and Paul Moore were tho best backed of the runners in tho Earoro Hurdles. At tho start, Otter led Lord Ainfllie and ft bundled field. Tho Summit ran of! at the first fenco, and Lord Ainolie took iip the running passing tho stand. Down tho back Sir Fisher and Paul Jfooro became prominent. At the last , fenco, Vacuum took oil with Sir Fisher, and tho latter, staying on well, beat the Feilding winner by half a length. Paul Mooro just beat Tanira for third place. Oyroflian was withdrawn from tho Maiden Plato, and Winning Shot, runner-up on each day at Feildim:. wan a short-priced favourite. Oloani madr, the early running, lut boforo tho ptrniilu was cntored Winning Shot had taken charge, and, attended 'by Tiranga. a-id Matatua, sho led into the straight. In the run .to the post si." held her own. .uid won easily. Tiranga jj.vr t 0 ),„ ridden out to beat Matalua. Sebright was fourth. Vnlo rnrried nearly twice as much money no Nobleman, (be second favourite in the hi* handicap. There was a painful delay iitthe bnrrier and p lot of time was lost. Probation and Comment were first out, and the former led for nearly a mile. Here. Trials took charge and won ei-sily from Teka and Gold Soult, hoth of whom hud been badly nlnced in tho first part, ""obation finished fourth, ond then came Ked 11160011, Comment, Multaine, and Nobleman. Karo and Oratress wore withdrawn from tho Sires' Produce Stakes. The liowrv bracket was a good' favourite. All stripped well, particularly Finmark, and Active. The start ivan n. straggling one. the first to show out being Heathercote. At the end of a furlong Torfreda was in c'jarge, and, running past tho

half-mile, 6ho was followed by Active, Hcathorcote, and Finniark. Rounding, the bend Finmark joined Active, and as they raced past tho stewards' stand the top weight had a gap of two lengths to make up. Ho settled down to his work, and after a great finish ho got up in time to win by a narrow margin. Active was two lengths away. The winnor got a good reception, and after the race tho horae and owner were loudly cheered by tho publicIn the Hack Welter Handicap four of the runners carried nearly £1000 each. Consultation was the actual favourite, with Midnight Star, Demotic, and. Colorado all well backed. The two latter wore unlucky in the running, and lost their chance. Warmth and Rienzi made the running into the straight, where Moutoa Camp shot out, and won easily from Rienzi, Midnight Star was close up third, and Quinnß Post led the remainder home. There was. intense excitement when the horses filed ..into the birdcage for tho Gold Cup. Desert Gold was the last in, and tho cheering started from the outside, and was quickly taken up by tho lawn patrons. When O'Shea mounted tho champion the cheering started afresh, and in the parade through the lawn the favourite got a great reception. Tho race needs little description, for after a good start the favourite ran. to tho front, and led all the way. At no stage of the race did 6he look like getting beaten, and she won well in 2min. 7 l-ssec. Menelaus was three lengths away, and Impediment was a poor third. During the race the cheering continued. The scene after the horses returned to weigh will nover be forgotten—there were cheers and cheers. At tho presentation of tho Gold Cup the president, Mj. -H. R. Cooper, made a speech eulogising tho action of Mr. Lowry in bringing back tie mare from Randwick to race for the Gold Cup. Later on Mr. LowTy was hoisted shoulder-high and carried to the birdcage, ' while tho mare was fairly mobbed by the crowd. There were some heated scenes in the birdcago, and the owner of Biplane got a very bad reception. Ibox, tho favourite in the Woodhcy Hack Handicap, got badly left and took no part iu.the race. The winner turned up in the Hastings-trained Formline, who took charge soon after tho start.and led for tho remainder of tho journey. Galore ran up to him at tho distance, but the lightweight finished tho best, and won easily, while Gold Problem beat Galore for Eeoond place. Lady General was a slightly better favourito than Turangapito for tho concluding event. Staccato got rid of her rider at tho barrier and took.no part in the race, while- Turangapito was left at the post. Lady General was early in front with Birkcnvulo and Lady Black. The favourite was first into the straight, but Croesus challenged at the distance, ana. in a good finish tho top-weight won hy a head. Astor was close up, and Lady Black finished fourth.
