London and Wales the birth-fate recorded • an ' average bf 800,000 births for each year, and of these 100,000. died a year after birth--6r within the year., -What , aggravated this position , of affairs was that.of these 20,000 cli.ee! within a week and 30,000 within, 'a month of birth. ' The conditions - in the World to-day, made the work of this society nidre impprtftut than ever. Had the .voluntary system of enlistment been allowed, to continue wo , would havb had a state of affairs by mean's of which the fit would have been eliminated, but conscription had saved us from that. . Many causes militated against the vigour of the race, alcoholism) yioe, and- "love.-- of ease among them, .'.iut. it was likely that the wfcr would eliminate the last to a great degree, for soule time to. come. -While the well-being , of infants■■• ttas- most necessary, the health of women, whioh ■this society also studied, was very necessary, ns the former greatly depended upon tho latter. There was too often it'great loss of infant life before the child was born, and in America this side, of tho matter ivaa -specially dealt.-with, a gvoa.t deal pf nity work being done. ■
